FANTASTIC 7 inch portable LCD TV !

Review Date: September 15, 2008
Reviewer: Tante Maren, Ohio, United States
I am really thrilled with my purchase of this Haier HLT71 7-inch, ATSC 2009-ready portable LCD TV! I have never heard of this name brand Haier, and I had heard many nightmare stories about some of the other name brands having poor pictures on these little screens, so I thought I'd give this Haier a try.
I ordered this tv directly from Amazon and it came to me from a seller on Amazon who goes by the name ANTOnline. The seller sent this perfect and fast to start with, which is always a big plus with me. When I opened the box, the set looked very sleek and light weight, just perfect! The tv I received is exactly like the picture shows in this description, black (it is the picture that has the remote control next to the tv), with really simple control buttons on the front. I then looked at the directions, but realized, I didn't need to read them at all! Everything is really obvious! The set has a little slide switch on the side to turn on the power. The antenna screws in really easy. It comes with a plug for the inside electrical outlet, and a plug for the car lighter, and a lightweight rechargeable battery! It has a little remote control which they made very easy to read! After screwing on the antenna (or you can attach your cable cord if you are using it in the house), I basically plugged it in, slid the power switch on, pressed the button to scan for setting the channels, and it does it quickly! In about 1 minute, it was set! I then tried the small battery, and it played perfectly without the electric power!
The picture is absolutely gorgeous, as it has the new atsc digital signal receiver built in! To see the local programs in digital on this little screen was fantastic! Colors are crisp, sharp and vivid, just like a big hdtv!
I have noticed that some reviews are giving this tv a low rating because it did not pick up any channels with the single rabbit ear that comes with the set. This tv picks up EVERY signal that is being broadcast in your area. Before you buy this tv, you should first go to a website called Antenna Web. On this site, you type in your address and it will show you exactly how many channels you can receive in your area and what type of antenna you will need to pick up the signals. Antenna Web said that in my area I could receive 8 signals, and the single rabbit ear that comes with this tv picked up all 8 channels. When I used a stronger antenna, I picked up 3 more channels. When I used my cable cord, I received over 60 channels, and when I used my cable cord with my box, I picked up 250 channels. Whatever I hooked up to the coaxial input on this tv, this tv picked up! If you live in an area that receives no broadcast signals or you need a high powered antenna to pick up anything, it is not the tv's fault, but your broadcasters. So, if you want to be certain your tv is picking up the signals correctly, go to Antenna Web and check to see what channels you can get in your area and what type of antenna you need to pick up the signals. My single rabbit ear, picked up everything including the hi-def channels, and the reception was crystal clear. (Also, don't forget to go to the tv's menu, and hit the little satellite dish picture, then hit the appropriate air or cable before you scan for your channels. This way you'll be certain your tv will receive the correct signals.)
The real plus for me on this tv, is the battery, because of so many electrical outages and bad storms, this is a must have item! The battery has a life of about 2-2 1/2 hours, perfect for a few shows while waiting out bad weather, or even for entertainment when traveling. The fantastic picture really blew me away. I just love the light weight of the tv, even with the battery, it's like a feather! There is even a built in stand to put it on a table! The sound is incredible as well- two speakers and really loud! This is unheard of on these small sets! They even thought of including a plug in for headphones, if you have them (headphones are not included), for quiet listening or for travel! Whoever designed this perfect set, knew what they were doing!
I am giving this perfect little tv 5 stars for being able to see a sharp, vivid, gorgeously colored hi-def picture, and set up without reading a direction, but especially because I can play it in my house, in my car, or carry it anywhere with the rechargeable battery, all at a great price too!
UPDATE: Haier vs. Axion 7 inch portable tv's
I am posting an update for anyone who is wondering what the differences are between these two portable tv's. A friend of mine purchased the Axion, and she immediately brought it over to compare it to my Haier. Here is what I found:
RECEPTION: Antenna Web said I could receive 8 channels in my area. With the single rabbit ear antenna, Haier picked up all 8 channels. Axion picked up 7 channels, but one channel was very fuzzy. When attaching a cable cord, both sets picked up everything.
SOUND: For these small sets, the sounds were very similar, but when turning the volume louder, the Haier was louder and not as tinny sounding as the Axion.
PICTURE: Both have very nice pictures, with great color, but the Haier definitely has a more hi-def, sharper looking picture.
REMOTE CONTROL: Haier's is easier to read, larger and has volume control, where Axion's is smaller and has no volume control.
BATTERY: Haier's battery is a plug in and lasts about 2 hours before needing charging. Axion's battery is built in, cannot be removed and lasted a little less than 1 hour before needing to be charged.
Overall, the sets are very similar, my personal choice being the Haier, as I think the picture is sharper, the price is better and the battery lasts longer for my needs in bad weather. Haier also has way more picture settings and adjustments in the tv's menu, but the pictures on both these sets are so great, I've never found a need to use them. The bottom line for me is the better picture and price give the edge to Haier, since the reception on these two sets is almost identical.
JUNE 12th,2009 NEWS UPDATE ON THE DIGITAL CHANGE:
I just read an article on the new digital change taking place titled CHANGE TO DIGITAL TV BROADCASTS ALREADY GETTING POOR RECEPTION. And they mean POOR RECEPTION literally. The article says the following: Many broadcasters across the country are transmitting the new digital signals with temporary transmission towers, just to meet the June 12th deadline. Permanent new towers are needed in order to move to a new higher frequency broadcast that should be easier for people's antennas to pick up. Once the new towers are built, probably later in 2009, the stations will change to another channel, and everyone will have to re-scan their t.v.'s to receive all the new digital channels. Unlike the old analog signals, you will never have any snow or static on your set, you will either have a perfect picture or one that is totally unwatchable. At this time, with so many broadcasters transmitting with temporary towers, you need a powerful antenna to receive anything on your set. I thought this article very important to let everyone know that right now, a powerful antenna is needed for reception, but by the end of the year, the permanent towers should be built and running full power, and that means any antenna should pick up everything. More importantly, remember to scan again to re-program your tv channels after June 12th, and again later in the year, when all the permanent towers are up. This will get you all the stations that will be changing to a new channel with the new frequencies. I hope this helps everyone, so they'll get the most channels out of their tv's!
UPDATE: MISSING OR NO CHANNELS AFTER DIGITAL CHANGE
This is an update for anyone who has lost channels or who has no channels after the digital change took place June 12, 2009, whether you re-scanned or not. I received this information to share with all of you from contacting the FCC, CBS, Antenna Web and Elgato Systems Technical Support. They were all very helpful in explaining to me what exactly is going on right now, which is this: Half of the nations tv stations (which at half is 1,760 stations) are running at full power, the other half of 1,760 stations are not. Some stations are completely off the air temporarily, and are available only through cable and satellite. In most major markets some channels are still in lower frequencies which many smaller antennas will NEVER pick up except MAYBE with the highest powered amplified antenna. Digital tv was originally planned to be broadcast in UHF (digital loop antenna needed), which are the higher channels. VHF (rabbit ears), which are the lower analog channels (2-13) was supposed to be gone, but it is not. The new digital tv is being broadcast in 2 different ranges both UHF and VHF. In other words, channels are missing, many channels are in frequencies we cannot pick up and only half of our stations are running at full power! What a mess! Antenna Web is now showing the new RF (Radio Frequency) channels in your area. Each station has 1 RF channel. If you see in your area, any low RF channels from 1-13 range, you will need a really high powered antenna to MAYBE receive your channels.
First, go to your tv to re-scan. Remove any batteries. Plug it in to the wall outlet. Find the satellite dish in your menu and set it to air (if using antenna) or cable (if cable is hooked up)and scan. You may have to do this several times and even more re-scans are needed over the next year or two!
The FCC recommends, if you are getting nothing, or very few channels, to do the following, before re-scanning:
1.) Re-orient the antenna
2.) Amplify the antenna (Not recommended by me, as these antenna's need electricity, which means it will be useless when used with the battery)
3.) Purchase a new HD antenna that will receive both VHF and UHF
When you buy an hd antenna for your set, try re-scanning it when you get home a few times to see what you get, if nothing works, return it and try another. (After re-scanning, make sure you try the tv with your battery to see what you can pick up for power outages.) Eventually one will work for your area and you'll be set for the next power outage. With only 1/2 the stations at full power, many channels temporarily missing that went to cable and dish tv, and many running on low analog frequencies, it's amazing our antenna sets are picking up anything right now! Shop till you get a good antenna for your area, and be patient as it will be years before everything is being broadcast in higher frequency digital tv! I hope this helps everyone, as the right antenna is everything right now!
UPDATE: MORE HAIER BATTERIES ARE FINALLY HERE! (September 26, 2009)
I am so happy that Haier has finally made more batteries available to purchase here on Amazon! Just type in Haier Battery and you'll see many sellers have them advertised and the prices are very competitive, starting at $24.00 plus shipping. I received mine quickly, tested it and we got a little over 4 hours of television with 2 batteries, which will be wonderful when we need a portable for the next power outage!(Without power, I recharged them in my car.)I've had my tv for 2 years now, and it's still like new, so paying for an extra battery is definitely worth it!
Best portable Digital tuner TV

Great little TV. The item I received differed from the one pictured, it was rubberized black and had better controls. I comes with a removable battery pack, 12v and AC adapters and a stick antenna.

We use it for keeping up with college football games while watching our daughters travel softball team.

The TV decodes everything. ATSC (over the air digital TV), NTSC (analog TV), regular cable TV AND even non-encrypted QAM cable TV (that was a huge plus for me).

I tried a Radio Shack 7" that looks a lot like the Amazon picture of the Haier above; but this TV is MUCH MUCH better. The antennas with these TV's are crap, get the silver sensor sold on Amazon and you will be amazed the channels you can pull in with this TV.

Good Luck.
Excellent!

My HLT71 also came with the black mar-resistant case.

Wow, what a great little TV! Not using the included antenna, but using another single retractable rod antenna - with a long cable attached, I was able, by moving the antenna away from the TV, to tune-in everything that my 27" Digital Sony can. Actually, even more analogue stations than the Sony.

Nothing in the advertising says this TV produces High Definition viewing. While it does pick-up HDTV stations, image quality is restricted by the LED television screen. But that image is really nice and sharp - almost HD.

Also, I can hardly believe that the included little lightweight lithium ion battery can be so powerful. It way out performs NmHd batteries. And the light weight AC adapter, and even the included lighter weight automobile adapter, they are of finest quality - like the TV itself.

It seems very odd that since this is the best 7" digital TV that I have ever seen that it is also the lowest in price. I got mine for $117.99 including free S&H.
Here's a different use and perspective...

Hopefully this review will provide a different perspective from others...

First of all, for those who had negative reviews based on a weak signal and problems with the settings and controls; if you took as much time to tinker a bit or read the manual as you did with writing the review you probably would have figured it out.

Having said that, here's my unique take. This TV is perfect for use with a treadmill. If you price treadmills or elliptical machines with built in LCD TVs you are looking at $1200-$1500 at the low end of the spectrum. But if you look for a quality treadmill with all the same bells and whistles minus the TV that price is cut in half. Think about that. You are essentially paying $400-$800 for a built-in 5 inch LCD TV with crappy speakers.

Instead, I bought this Haier to use for the same purpose. We have a nice treadmill situated in our little workout room and we simply mounted the Haier TV to a camera tripod. I picked one up from Wal-Mart for $19. The tripod is tall enough to sit right in front of the treadmill at eye level - just like a gym quality unit. Turn it on and start walking. The TV remote is handy for changing channels or adjusting the volume as you exercise.

I happen to have mine near the wall with the cable outlet and so I just hooked it up to a standard coaxial cable, changed the menu to CATV input and had it scan for channels. It picked up 99 channels in my area - including local networks, ESPN, HGTV, etc. On a recent rare occasion we had a cable outage, I moved the TV closer to the window, attached the antenna it came with, changed the menu to Antenna, scanned, and voila! 10 local channels including high definition local broadcasts.

If you like the idea of using this little wonder for exercising, don't hesitate. Buy it.

For those who complained of a weak signal right out of the box, consider your location. Unless you live in Florida, I'll bet you live in an area with foothills or changing elevations. When using an antenna or rabbit ears, television signals are delivered line-of-sight, not bounced around by a satellite. So if there is a hill, building, forest or other obstructions between you and the nearest broadcast station, well, I think you get the point. So before bashing this excellent little TV, do some research.

For those who complained about losing memory and the battery...did the instruction booklet tell you to remove the green plastic around the batteries? No. That is antistatic, anticorrosive paper needed to marry the two halves of the lithium packs. Also, check the little white plug again. If it's not properly seated, then the battery is not fully charging when it's plugged into DC and you will have to reprogram channels every time you turn it on. Again, just use a little common sense before giving this TV a 1-star review.

Last but not least, this TV has most of the same menu and setup features as a large modern LCD or Plasma TV. But at the end of the day it is still a standard definition set. Even if you receive an HD channel you will still only be able to view it at standard definition. And for that this TV does a wonderful job. Color saturation is great and blacks are blacks. If you wanted HD quality did you really think you would get it for $100?
Some things other reviewers missed

Review Date: January 17, 2009
Reviewer: Franklin Hu, Seattle, WA
I read all the reviews, so I won't cover any of that.

The one strange thing is that you cannot turn the TV off by using the front buttons. You turn the TV on using a small switch on the side and once it is on, you can't turn it off using any of the front buttons. If you want to turn the screen off and put the TV into standby, you must use the remote. So if you want to keep the TV in your bathroom, you must have the remote handy to turn it off/on. You can still turn it off using the switch on the side, but that is kinda awkward.

The antenna can be stored in a clip on the top of the TV, but it would have been better to have just built it into the TV like the Axion does.

The battery looks like a plastic wrapped lithium polymer battery. There is a cover for the battery and it can be removed unlike the Axion.

One very cool feature is that it also appears to be able to tune in digital QAM channels on my limited basic Comcast cable. All of the sudden I can see many more HD channels than I could see before. Too bad this doesn't have a TV output so I could it like a converter box.

If you're thinking of mounting this TV on a wall, it doesn't have any mounting holes in the back so you can mount it like a picture. The stand makes it tilt quite a ways back making it difficult to view from far away. There is a tripod mount on the bottom.

If you are viewing text graphics - like on a weather channel, the text looks a bit fuzzy, but otherwise the picture is pretty good.

An annoyance is that the TV has either a wide or normal mode. If you put it into normal mode, it makes all channels (include HD ones) in a 4:3 format. This really squashes HD channels. If you put into wide format, it makes all channels 16:9, which makes non HD channels stretched. It would have been better to make it intelligent enough to display HD in wide and non-HD in 4:3, but no such luck. Most everything looks fine in wide mode though.

It's a terrific little TV and an amazing price - highly recommended.

Let me clear up some misconceptions...

Review Date: May 6, 2009
Reviewer: hunter_aran,
This is a great HDTV. Hands down is one of the most beautiful displays in this size. You can buy a fancier ultra-thin 32" TV from Samsung right now but it's almost twice the price!

Pros: The blacks are black! When you start it up, the Bravia logo appears on a black background and it's as black as when the TV is off! People say that edge LED lighting will make the blacks truer with less backlight bleeding but this TV is already great in this aspect. The colors and settings are very good out of the box for a few of the styles but need adjustment like any TV. The nice thing is that when you change your input, the TV remembers all the settings for that input! So it's like you never have to re-adjust your settings unless you plug your stuff in differently.

The motionflow frame interpolation technology is astounding! 120HZ with the motionflow is worth every penny for bluray and other high-def sources. That's why I waited for this over the XBR6. I however prefer the lifelike "soap-opera" look, but that's me (I have to say PE or the Pirates movies look stunning with it on!). You can turn it off or have this appear more more subtle (the default). The motionflow is basically a side-effect of the necessity to combat blurriness and the staggering "judder" effect inherent to LCDs. It adds one or more frames in between each frame of your source by interpolating entirely NEW frames that were never there by the TV's processor. technology is amazing, isn't it? You have to see it in person to get exactly what this looks like. Other companies are following suit but I find others like the 32 TOC Samsung have more motion artifacts (basically errors ie grabbing parts of the audience behind a fast-moving player in a sports event and dragging them along for the ride). Sony's Bravia processor is second to none. For upconverted sources not originally in 1080 and compressed 1080 cable, the motion technology is less noticeable. So the overall effectiveness depends on how clear the material is.

This is important--with the game mode on, which turns off most processing, there is almost NO LAG. I am one of those demanding gamers who is very sensitive and complains about miniscule things like how much play there is in a joystick. So I can tell you that there is still a little lag but the game mode makes fast games like Smash Bros and shooters play like my CRT. So losing the motionflow in the game mode might seem bad, but it's only a small difference especially on something like the 480p Wii. And Wii games with anti-aliasing like Metroid Prime 3 still look AWESOME in contrast to what most say. The PS3 does look AMAZING either with or without motionflow anyway!

Cons: Not many but the sound is tinny. What do you expect from such small speakers? If you spent this much on a 32 TV and don't have speakers then you should not complain.

There is no headphone jack. I use a mixer with a control-room out to get around this and it works fine.

The autodim is annoying but mainly happens for me when the room is VERY dark. In normal light I do not see it. And you cannot turn it off but with as many people as are complaining about it, all Sony has to do is release a firmware update to allow the switching on and off of it (Sony, are you reading this?)...

CLARIFICATIONS-----

Here are some points that I thought were incorrect in some other reviews so I felt compelled to make this clear to potential buyers.

Okay some people just don't do their research in TVs. Sony's top line of HDTVs is the XBR line. The XBRs are split into the standard and then two higher end levels. Last year we had the XBR6s (standard XBR), XBR7s (larger fancier models) and XBR8 (larger still fancier models). This XBR9 IS NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR XBR8!! It replaces the XBR6 and the XBR8 was WAY more money and there was not even a 32" one available! The reviewer who complained about there being no LED backlighting is wrong in getting upset because the XBR6 never had LED lighting and the XBR8 is a higher end unit which is different that the XBR9s. Sony will undoubtedly release an XBR10 and XBR11 or something to replace those two higher lines. Maybe in the next few years Sony will add edge LED lighting to the standard XBR line unless something like OLED takes off...

Next the TV takes about as long to start up as my over 10-year-old Sony Trinitron 32" XBR CRT does. Some models take longer some don't but it certainly is not 30 seconds! That reviewer must have gotten a problem unit or need a firmware update or something. Also, to change input, all you have to do is push "Input" then push that arrows up or down and that's it. Wow if that is too much for you, then technology is not your thing. Maybe you should hire someone to push the buttons for you so you don't have to. Come on.

The thing has many inputs and, yes, some are on the side. On bigger TVs this would probably get covered up so on this one you can see some cabling if you have a thick cable that cannot bend easily. If you are clever you can use the cord-management strap to clean this up but my thick Monstercable does not bend that easily so I do see it. Oh well. So with thinner types of cables that bend back easily you should be fine. It's common knowledge that you get the same quality in a $5 HDMI cable as a $200 one because it is digital; getting a cheap thin one should solve the side cable-view problem. I wanted a more durable cable though.

This is a relatively high-end HDTV that means it's designed to be used primarily to view HD content over a HDMI cables. That's why over half it's inputs are HDMI. So if you have a ton of stuff in composite or component, sorry, but Sony is trying to cater to the people who utilize the TV primarily for what it was designed for. Get a splitter/switcher or upgrade your cables to HDMI because, again, no matter how crappy your HDMI cables are, there is NO signal loss. There's an advantage to update anyway.

Also contrary to popular belief numbers across different manufacturers ARE NOT EQUIVALENT. So comparing Lg to Sony to Samsung is not at all accurate. Think of comparing HP numbers in cars--measuring at the flywheel or tire gets you VERY different results and this often misleads consumers. Trust your eyes on a calibrated set with the same source. I can tell you this TV has more than enough contrast and is improved over last years model.

----
So far I have not had any problems with the TV and it looks amazing. I would recommend this to anyone and if you are internet savvy and find a good company to work with, you can find it for only slightly more than the closeout or last-year's KDL32XBR6 model--about $850 (or less, as in my case) :D

EDIT: Thanks to other posters for mentioning this--Sony has released a firmware update that apparently makes the menus easier to navigate (faster?) and FIXES THE AUTODIM PROBLEM! I am trying to figure out how to install it now...
Sony has fix for backlighting problem in the advanced contrast section.

We were unhappy with this TV and then found that Sony has fixed the back light issue so you can adjust it or turn it off and this has fixed the screen changing from dark to light with different scenes. It was easy to down load this onto a usb memory stick and the TV automatically did the update. The channels seem to change faster also. Here is the web site for downloading it from Sony - just make sure you follow all of the steps and read the info first. They will mail you the update on stick also.

Excellent Crisp Picture Once You Upload Sony Updated Software

Buying a new LCD TV can be a nightmare with all the choices. We had a Sony XBR4 which died 2 months ago after only 20 months but luckily I remembered that Mastercard doubled the one year warranty and got a check back for $1,080 to buy a new set. At first, I was drawn to the amazing $1,300 Samsung LED with what seemed to be the clearest picture (the store had the Samsung LED on it's own Blue Ray player which was deceiving). Then I went to a big box retailer and looked at all the LCD (and LED) sets on the wall. The Sony XBR9 had the blackest blacks and the best picture by far! Then I did some research and found out that Sony sends out a free USB stick with updated programing for an even better picture. The picture now is downright amazing and golf on HD looks like you are right there. If I only had $400, I would go with the Vizio at Wallyworld. But at a $700 price point, the Sony XBR9 is a great deal. Keep in mind that LCD's will only last 5 to 7 years given that LCD is less durable than the old tube sets. So if anyone knows where to get a cheap extended warranty please let me know. If you get the set, please remember to call Sony and get the USB stick to upgrade the picture!

Sony 32" XBR9 is a good TV with great picture.
I have read review that this model dim in and out and got darker on a dark scene. I found out if you used HDMI line with a upconverting DVD player, this problem will happen. I think in the process of upconverting 480 to 1080 it causes the dimming and darken effect in the dark scene. If you used component and composite line, this problem will be solved. Try it and enjoy your Sony 32" XBR9.

Well there was no review for this item so I figured I would right one. I recently started doing internet research since I wanted a new computer monitor and something to watch my Blu-rays on that was high definition. I wanted 1080P for maximum resolution and to make my Blu-rays look the best so the smallest you can get that in is 32' right now. Also right now there are only like 5 TV companies I think that have 32 with 1080P. After looking at them for a while I would say if you want the best it is this one I think it is the only one I found with 120hz refresh all the rest have 60hz. Also it had the second best contrast ratio but I think the Lg's was only 10000 above and all the others were way below. I was also looking at the Sharp AQUOS mainly because it says it has a gaming accelerator thing which it was still 60hz so I doubt that it would make up for it.
So in the end I went to best buy and bought one mainly because I wanted the 4 year best buy warranty since it is my first HDTV and so far everything seems to work great. It has a an advanced contrast adjuster which 2 times now has made the image darken during a movie for a a couple seconds but I probably just need to adjust the settings or shut it off. Also I have had heard people complain about the sound which I think is good when you put a movie on with the simulated surround sound on you have to turn the volume way up but it works nice.
Anyway this was my first review hope I did ok.

I LOVE this TV but...

Review Date: November 19, 2008
Reviewer: Beth C. Roman, HOUSTON, TX USA
I had a 5" black and white in my kitchen and knew with the digital conversion, I would need something else. I ordered this based on the 2 reviews out there at the time and I am so pleased with this TV. I live in Houston so there are almost 40 channels available between the digital and the analog, I get channels on this that I don't even get on my standard cable! initially I had trouble with some of the digital stations, I kept moving the TV around trying to pick up the signal (my problem was that I want the TV to sit under my cabinets and I guess that was interfering with the antenna picking up clear signals). I was getting frustrated and then remembered the other antenna it comes with. I unplugged the internal connection and plugged this extra antenna in and placed it on my window sill and all the channels came in perfectly without having to adjust anything. The cord on the extra stand up antenna is long enough to put it rather far from the TV which is very convenient because you can move it around to find the best reception. The picture is clear as a whistle and the sound is very good, not muffled or fuzzy at all. The wide screen is another bonus, most of the digital HD channels are in wide screen mode so it works out well. This is a no brainer to set up and I am so glad I took the plunge and bought it!

Update: I have not had to use this yet in a power outage but have occasionally unplugged it and brought it to the table to watch during dinner when I wanted to see a show I was in the middle of. The 1 1/2 hr. battery now barely works for 1/2 hr. and I have not used it often. I really bought this to use in my kitchen but also just as importantly, to work during another hurricane after having a small black and white that took batteries and worked beautifully last time I needed it. With the new digital change, I had to find something else to have on hand and apparently, this won't be it. There is a new one coming out in August that does take regular alkaline batteries, I would suggest you go for that one if you want something to work in emergencies. Will still use this in my kitchen but now I will probably have to buy the other one just for emergency use since I live in a hurricane prone area. Very disappointed.

Update #2: Found a solution to the low battery power. The new TV that has the battery option is not well rated and apparently to get the battery power, you have to buy an additional $70 piece. After some research, I discovered that Duracell makes an 100 watt inverter power to go unit, it is a supplemental battery that can be charged from any outlet and/or from your car as well, and it will provide additional battery power not only for this TV but for cell phones, ipods or any other small electronics. Not only will it provide power, it will recharge your devices as well. It provides 44 hrs. of charge for an ipod, 12 days for a mobile phone, and 2 hrs. for a laptop. And, it has several outlets on it so you can use more than one device at a time with this battery. This item sells for about $40 and is a good solution for anyone who worries about being without power for any length of time.

Was asked for a link for the power source so here it is: Duracell 852-0281-07 DC to AC 100 Watt Inverter & 4.0 Amp/Hour Lithium Ion Mobile Power Source and I have this one which I picked up for about $40 but it is currently $99: Xantrex Technologies 852-0281 XPower PowerSource 100 Watt Inverter

UPDATE #3: Finally found a real old fashioned battery solution that this TV will work with. You just need D batteries and can keep replacing them for long term outages. This will also work with other small electronics with the right cords (like cell phones and ipods and anything with a car charger). Unfortunately Amazon doesn't sell it but here is where I got mine:

This should finally solve a lot of the problems with these digital TVs!
Nice TV

I bought this little TV for my wife for Christmas to replace the Sony 5" b&w that she uses in the kitchen. Unlike the Sony, it will be connected to cable so I figured reception won't be a problem. To test it before wrapping I auto-programmed it but only 4 local channels worked. This one came with a yellow tape strip on the back stating that the battery MUST be charged before the first use so out of desperation I followed the instructions and it worked great after that! Sharp clear picture, good color, sound a little "small" but has "presence". I like it. So if all else fails read the directions!
Amazing Portable TV

Reviewer: D. Perkins,
I had little hope for great reception from this portable TV, I live in the country 50 miles from the transmitter towers. Analog reception is poor, but digital reception is amazing. Most of the stations are transmitting in digital and I get them all, although I most use the external antenna and it is very directional sensitive. The picture is as sharp as my digital cable connected LCD and sound quality is also excellent for the size of the speakers. The remote does not have a power or volume control functions which would be nice. On battery power it operates about two hours. I am so pleased with this TV and may buy another one for my office.

Axion AXN-8701 7-Inch Widescreen Portable Handheld TV with Built-In Tuner (Black)

First of all I was very pleased in receiving my TV very quickly (from Amazon). I must admit the TV has exceeded my expectations. Great quality, easy to work controls with all of the modern technologies. I am a very mobile person (from office, to home office, to patio, etc.) and this set works great. I even attempted to connect while in my patio hoping to use CABLE. I simply inserted the plug from my cable box and reconnected TV's, using the Axion - AND PRESTO - All cable channels came alive.

I haven't attempted to use the battery, but the manual indicates 100 minutes and while normally sufficient, I need to figure out an alternative (even though the battery cannot be removed - otherwise I would purchase a separate unit) as we plan on using the set during the Presidential Inaguration ceremonies in D.C., since we aren't lucky enough to get "front row" seats."

Anyway, this is a good buy and excellent for a person who is mobile.
I don't think you will go wrong with this

I purchased this for myself then ordered another as a Christmas present for a friend. The SF Bay Area is nortorious for reception - with the external antenna many channels came in crystal clear (with the internal antenna some stations were fuzzy). Stuffed everything into an old portable CD player travel case (Case Logic) for storage. Tested the battery - it indeed supplied an hour+ play-time.

More with less

Review Date: May 5, 2009
Reviewer: Paul Moskowitz, Yorktown, NY
My requirement for a television is quite simple: plug it in to the cable box and have it work the first time; then turn on the sports event of the day, e.g. Mets or Yankees, Jets or Giants, etc. The Samsung 46 inch LED TV does that very well. You plug it in, it works.

This TV does more with less. It weighs only about 40 pounds plus another 10 pounds for the stand. Compare that with the older Samsung 950 model of the same size which weighs 70 pounds. The elegant stand allows for easy rotation. The TV is only a little over one inch thick! Power consumption has been measured by reviewers at about 105 watts. The 950 model comes in at 180 watts.

The picture is great. The contrast ratio, rated at 3,000,000 to 1, exceeds that of older LCD TVs. The black areas are dark and the picture has an almost 3D quality. There are four preset picture options. I chose the "normal" setting. The next higher setting, "standard", makes infield grass look almost dayglow. I do not think that there is a need to have any further adjustment done on the picture. However, there is an automatic dimming of the overall brightness for dark scenes. For instance, when the credits of a movie run against a black background the lettering becomes dimmer. This has no effect on sports, but does effect dark movie scenes.

The screen surface does reduce reflections but does not eliminate them entirely. The black frame is shiny and does also reflect some light. Rotating the screen to the best angle helps.

The remote provides choices for four picture size variations. I use "16:9" for the HD format or "wide" to make the non-HD, 4:3, video fill the screen. That loses some of the 4:3 picture at the top and bottom edges, but the picture quality is still good.

The sound also has four preset choices. Although, the internal speakers are not bad, I decided to use my sound system for the audio. The TV has an audio output connection, but the TV remote volume control only allows variation in the sound level for the internal speakers. The audio output stays at a constant level. I got around this by taking the audio from my cable box directly to my sound system and controlling the level with the cable remote. This works.

Although Samsung provides a version of the instruction manual on a USB drive with the TV, I found it easy to download and print a pdf of the manual from the Samsung support center. Having the printed manual is helpful. See my comment for the web address of the support center.

After one month, I still really like this TV. It is great for sports. An added bonus is that my electric bill has actually gone down.

Note: This review was written for the 6000 model. The 7000 model differs from the 6000 model in its I/O capabilities. Recently some people have reported that the 7000 has a better picture. If you do not need the extras, go with the 6000 and save a few dollars.

Love this TV

Review Date: September 15, 2009
Reviewer: DXM, Rochester, NY USA
I won't go into as much detail as some others, but I do want to say that I've had this TV for 3 weeks and I absolutely love it. One thing I noticed on all TV's my friends have is when the scene goes dark, you can see the entire screen glow and most LCDs will only go so dark. Due to LED technology, which does not disappoint, this TV will go pitch black on dark scenes and very bright on light scenes.

One thing I do want to mention is that Samsung's Auto Motion Plus (AMP) is something that takes time to get used to, if you choose to use it. The funnies thing I've read about this TV is a person who paid over $2k and then sent the TV back because they said TV made everything they watched "look cheap, like a soap opera", so they rated TV one star, shipped it back to the store and bought a different brand. As soon as I got the TV hooked up, I popped in Matrix II into the DVD player and I did notice what that person was talking about. Entire movie didn't feel quite like a movie, but more like someone was holding a video camera and was following all the car chases and everything else. It did remind me of those "cheap" TV programs, but is also looked kind of like you are actually there. I read more about it and realized that if I turn off AMP, the TV will show everything "normally" and there is absolutely no reason to send it back if AMP is not your thing.

However, I read more about AMP and from what I can tell, it is the imperfections in normal movies and motion blur that we are all used to. What AMP does is figure out where all moving objects are, "unblurs" them and actually plays back the scene at 120fps instead of 24fps. Extra frames are extrapolated based on object motion in the scene. The result is that everything is extremely sharp and clear and motion blur is almost entirely gone. I've seen Matrix II about 8 times and when I watched it with AMP turned on, I noticed extra cool, little details which I've never even noticed before when watching it on a regular TV.
Great Set

Review Date: July 5, 2009
Reviewer: R. Williams, Los Angeles, CA United States
This TV has produced a lot of controversy. After having spent a lot of time wading through it, passively and actively (debating it in threads), I came to the conclusion that I would get this set for a number of reasons:

1. I was not convinced by the people who were claiming that there were serious issues with this TV. One reviewer claimed to have seen trails in large dark objects. I went to the store and found NO ability to see it, and it was right next to the 750 (and a lot of other sets). As to the LED being edge and thus the lighting being inconsistent, ditto. I am not saying that it's all lies and local dimming is useless. I am saying that it's not something I can see right now (and that's really all I care about).

2. This set is INSANELY thin. I have a space for mine where this actually makes a big difference.

3. I like to vote with my dollars. This is the lowest consuming television ever made. The CNET list of sets showed that the range was 8:1, which is pretty phenomenal if you think about it; in cars, mileage is not even that spread out. This is a REMARKABLE achievement and it's a drag to hear people whining about dumb little imperfections that 99% of people would never see while they are buying from the other end of the spectrum. Of course, the amount of energy less you are going to use is not going to make a revolution, but a tiny percentage of all TVs using this amount would make a huge difference (game theory 101).

The biggest difference from my prior set (Westinghouse LCD) is this one actually has blacks.

The controls, menus, remote, etc., are all fine (I use a universal remote). Having a bunch of HDMI ports is great. I plugged in the connection to the web and looked at the Yahoo Widgets. Calling them useless at this point is an understatement. Should be interesting to see what is coming from that direction.

The argument that if the 750 looks just as good, save the money and get that is a compelling one. In terms of value overall, I paid ~$1500 for my 42" Westinghouse 3 years ago. I just replaced it because it had developed background noise (patterns you could see). If this set lasts 2 more years, it will have exceeded the prior value in size and savings of energy.

Again, this is a remarkable achievement in an industry that had told us we'd all be using power sipping OLED by now, this is a hybrid strategy, here today.
Amazing is the only way to describe...

I was eyeing this tv the day it was introduced and had to put it off for a while because of my upcoming wedding.

After that was over though, I was right back to salivating over this set. I was ready to pay retail for this at a certain blue big-box store. Never even thinking to check Amazon for it. Long story short I did and I am in LOVE with this set! It has been worth every penny so far.

I have been drawn to Samsung LCD's ever since they came out with the Touch of Color. We ended getting this one in the red because it brought a really good balance of color to our living room. This tv is also available in TOC gray at the aforementioned big-box store. But why get something this beautiful in a color that won't make it stand out?! Of course the profile only being a little over 1" makes this look incredible mounted with Samsung's slim wall mount kit. With the kit it only stands off of the wall about two inches and is easy enough to install. I love when people first come over and see it. I get comments on how nice this tv is every time. And that's before I even turn it on!

Hit the power button and WOW, the colors are just incredible and the blacks are actually black. No issues have been seen that have been mentioned in other reviews(ie: inconsistent backlighting). I was afraid I was going to have to adjust the settings like crazy to get the screen as good as it looked in the store. Boy was I wrong. I changed maybe two sliders slightly in the menu. Speaking of which.... the menu's are very easy to use and are laid out thoughtfully. Everything seems to be customizable too, including the standby light and little jingle when you power on and off(Nice touch, Samsung! I cannot say the same for the Vizio in our bedroom.). Tons of connections in the back too.

I also cannot get around the fact that this tv just flat out saves us money too!! It's power consumption is insanely low. We use the DLNA Technology in this to access our home server directly and watch movies, listen to music and view photos we have saved. So it is on almost all the time in our home. I was intending to do this with whatever tv I purchased so this one is essentially paying for itself over a standard LCD. And of saving money makes my wife happy! :)

Two things that bug me though:

The internet features that seperate this model from the 6000 series seem to be of limited function though. I check it occasionally to see the new content that is available, but nothing has really seemed to interest me yet. I will keep watching though, I have heard of some promising things on the horizon for this.

The glossy finish on bezel is EXTREMELY SCRATCH PRONE!! I knew this, my wife did not. With luck though, I realized that Zaino show car wax fixes the bezel back to better than new. Much better actually! It almost looks liquid now! I have yet to take a good picture but look at the Nissan 350Z on their home page and you'll get the idea. [...]

I would say that covers all of the major stuff with the Samsung UN46B7000. I have owned this tv for about four months now and would say that if any other annoyance would be popping up, it would have happened by now. I had the Samsung UN40B7000 for about 3 weeks and loved the picture quality and the features it has. Coming from a 27 to a 32 and now a 40" I love the large screen size. I would have thought the large the screen the more defects I would notice on the screen but that did not affect me at all. Now I can't see my shelf viewing a smaller screen at all anymore. This past week I noticed that the prices on the UN40B7000 and UN467000 dropped dramatically at my local Fry's $1499 for the 40" and $1699 for the 46" and both included the Samsung BD P1600 Blue Ray Player worth $225 for FREE. I had no choice but return my 40" and replaced it with the 46" for the same price I paid for the 40" and received the Free Blue-Ray player. Now that I have hooked up the UN467000 I love the bigger screen and happy I upgraded to the 46" for the same price.

Picture:
I didn't notice any flashing or black corners on both of my Samsung 7000, only clear high resolution picture with vivid colors. Compared to the Sony XBR9 the Samsung LED picture quality is bright and the color pops out. HD picture is awesome and the SD is okay for an LCD much better than my old 32" and my brothers XBR4. With 3,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 120hz Auto Motion that you can be turn off or adjusted this TV has an it all.

Blue Ray movies is outstanding, best picture I've ever seen in any TV set and the standard DVD plays great as well not Blue Ray quality but it's a step up from my old TV. But I don't know if it's because of my new 46" 7000 or the new Samsung BD P1600 that Fry's throw in that make the picture much better or both.

Gaming:
I have the TV set up with the PS3 and it's great. The picture quality is amazing no blur affects at all in fast movement.

Sound:
Speakers could be better but what do we expect for a TV that is 1.2" thin. I've purchased the Sony HTC T100 sound bar to get better sound. I must say the HTC T100 has a great sound and meets my expectation and needs (See my review).

Features:
I haven't yet connected the TV to the internet to see how the widget or DNLA works but I have used the USB connection to plug in my flash drive to view movies, picutres and listen to music. I've even connected my I-pod to it and it plays my music, video and even charges the battery.

Overall this TV is the best LCD TV I've seen and I've been looking for months. The prices are steadily going down and it's much more affordable to go larger now than it was a month ago and according to what I've read the prices might go even lower when it gets closer to the Super Bowl and of course Black Friday. I highly recommend this TV to any one who is looking for a thin set that doesn't compromises picture quality, features or price.

Making a case for LG; amazing tv.

LG does'nt get enough praise.

Just bought this TV for the sake of it being an IPS panel and for its apparent adjustability (and also 1080p). Plus this tv is so easy to calibrate; the 'picture wizard' is extremely helpful.

The amount of menu options is jaw-dropping, as is the style of the set. The LH40 model looks neat with the plastic square along the bottom of the panel, but I like the more minimalist look of the LH30, and I do not like the 120hz or the $100 price jump of the LH40.

I made a comparison to my sony 32M4000 (which I have now given to my father) and there are some interesting differences (many are polar opposites):

-The sound is far superior on the LG.

-Black levels are very close, sony's is a bit deeper and maintains black colors better at angles.

-The whiteness of whites is slightly better on the sony, but colors and mid tones definitely have more of a 'punchy' factor on the LG.

-Color is amazing; rich and saturated; best ive seen on any LCD, period.

-Color does not wash out at all from different angles, only very dark colors and black tend to become discolored (blue or red depending on the angle).

-Of course there are far, far fewer picture options on the sony.

-My sony has a ghosting problem with dark colors, not so on the LG; motion blur and lag is also reduced too.

-OTA HD channels look decent enough, not as sharp as the sony, but the better color makes up for it imo.

What was the main factor that made me get this LG?..its S-IPS panel.

Samsung is an excellent maker of lcds, but I steered clear of them this time, as buying a tv from them is like playing the lottery. They use 3 different panels with differing levels of color and contrast quality; you are not essentially getting what you pay for:

You may get Samsung's own S-PVA panel, the best quality (if you're lucky).

An A-MVA panel from Taiwan's AUO (a notch worse than S-PVA).

Chinese company Chi Mei's S-MVA panel (worst of the three).

Panasonics IPS Alpha panels are decent, but on some panels dark colors appear far too blue from different angles.

That narrows it down to LG's S-IPS panel; its color saturation, vividness, and response time are worth the slight sacrifice in contrast and black depth (at least in my opinion).

This tv is not perfect, however; I spotted 3 dead pixels right out of the box (2 bright, 1 dark), right around the middle of the screen. They are practically invisible without being a foot from the screen and looking hard for them, however.

Viewing angles demonstrate some darkening of the picture, but its not too bothersome (swivel stand helps).

No other flaws I can think of at the moment, I recommend this tv!

My calibration settings use color adjustments from cnet.com along with some of my own tweaks, try them out!

The LG 32LH30 32-Inch 1080p replaced a 720p 32 inch Samsung which I returned because of erratic sound quality. The LG provides a very clear picture for upscaled DVD movies and over the air digital signals. The speakers provide excellent sound for a small living room although the addition of a home theater system would substantially increase movie enjoyment. Standard definition signals also reproduce a stable clear picture. Colors are very good and the set provides sufficient tools to tweak the picture for personal preference. I have not used it for bluray as yet but HD from satellite is very good. The features of this unit described on the Amazon specifications list accurately describe its features and can be relied upon. I am not a hard core cinema/video buff but I cannot imagine that this unit will not satisfy most viewers who want a well priced midsized flat screen high definition TV. My five stars are based upon what I expect in similarly designed and priced units for a smaller room.

05/14/2010 I have just connected the LG 32LH30 to a blueray player as well as a WII with Netflex connectivity. They both work well and the LG's bluray images are as sharp and vivid as those on my 40 inch Sony Bravia. I continue to be pleased with my purchase although I must also report the failure of the remote control (just out of warranty). LG customer support referred me to a third party vendor who sold me a replacement for about $17.00. This was my first failure of a remote since they were first introduced way back when.

First, I am feeling cheated right now, since I paid over [...] for this TV around a few months back. On the other hand, there is a lot of positive things about this TV which I really appreciate.

1. The picture quality is just amazing. It really has a enriched color display and your experience with sports will probably be awesome.

2. The sound quality is not the best I can get, but it is really close to perfection and I would still rate it 5.

3. The body has a rich color and is perfect and is stylish.

4. When viewed from various angles, there is very little depreciation of real output and a few faded spots do appear. On a comparison with other models, this is very minimal. Also, you would be viewing from a good distance, which voids the issue. We also use the swivel when you hook it up for games.

5. I have it connected with DVD players and it is awesome so far. Very satisfied with picture quality.

I kind of wish I have a bigger screen though. I saw this 37" 1080p [...]which is also glossy black at a local store and is just a [...] extra.

It depends on your viewing distance and how far your sofa is from the television. With 1080p and a deep discount, I would call this a deal!!
LG 32LH30 - Great Value & Picture

Having recently bought a 42" LG for my family room, when I decided to outfit my bedroom, I stuck with LG and I am glad I did. Although "conventional wisdom" says you don't need 1080P on a 32" set, I am glad I paid the small extra for it on this model.

Setup was a no-brainer, the picture is phenomenal, and I think LG is a far better value than similar sets from Samsung and others. Best about the LG models is the dizzying array of picture controls, so no matter your particular pleasure, you can be sure you'll find a setting you like, or ones you can modify to suit your tastes.

Although I have home theater also installed in the bedroom, I ran the HDMI cable from the cable box direct to the TV and for everyday TV viewing the sound is fine. But I ran optical from the cable box to the receiver, so when I want to watch a movie in Dolby 5.1, it's there.
Best 32" LCD on the Market

Very pleased with the LG 32LH30. Fantastic picture and sound quality in a beautiful glossy black frame. Before purchasing, compared this with other entry-level 1080p sets; almost purchased the Sony S series until I saw a side-by-side comparison. In my opinion, LG makes the best 32" LCD on the market. Only complaints are the poor layout of the remote control and no analog stereo outputs, but otherwise, a great product for the money. I'm now considering the larger LH90 series for the family room. And, thanks to Amazon for the quick service and on-time delivery.
