VIZIO XVT423SV 42-Inch Full HD 1080p LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application, Black Review

First, let me say I own the 47″ LG 47LE8500 for my living room with its stunning high def picture and extremely poor speakers. I was looking for a slightly smaller (and less expensive) TV for my bedroom and chose this 42″ Vizio. Vizio has a similar 47″ model under this newly released line. (So far, I am mostly happy with my purchase.)

Both the LG and Vizio have LED LCD with Local Dimming. I have to say that the high def picture on the Vizio is not as stunning as on the LG 47LE8500, but it is close, and still satisfying.

The black levels are better on the LG, but pretty close on the Vizio.

The Vizio arrived with one of the round rubber “feet” missing under the base. (Better quality control and inspection please?)

The WiFi on the Vizio is fabulous. The remote having a qwerty keyboard is fabulous.

First thing I had to do (for personal preference) is turn off the room light sensor. The picture was way too dark for me when the light sensor was on.

Also, the default screen brightness setting with the light sensor off is too bright, in my opinion. The brightness level is at 50 by default on the standard pic setting, and it looks brighter than the 50 setting on other sets. (But it is very easy to adjust, of course.)

The speakers on the Vizio are much better than on the LG.

I dislike that the Vizio does not have a swivel base.

Standard def is quite acceptable (and better than on the LG).

So, bottom line: If you want to save some money, this new Vizio line is a very good choice (and recommended). Once you customize the pic settings, I think you will be happy with the high def picture. If you have extra money to burn, the LG will give you a more stunning high def picture with better black levels, but you probably will dislike the LG’s speakers, especially if you listen to a lot of music with the volume raised.

Adding to my review, August 28:

When the TV is off, the Vizio logo at the front is lit up in orange. I have found no way to turn this off. I hope that if enough people complain, perhaps Vizio will release a software update that will allow the turn off of this orange Vizio light.

I have encountered bad lip sync issues. But luckily, Vizio has included in the Audio settings a Lip Sync adjustment setting. I had to enable this setting, as the lip sync mismatch problem was really bad. The adjustment has helped.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

LG 42LD550 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV Review

This is my first HDTV, so keep that in mind – I was bound to be wowed by HD, no matter what the TV. But I really like this one. It has excellent specs (high contrast ratio, 2.7ms response time, 120 Hz) and a ‘picture wizard’ that seemed to do a great job in calibrating the picture settings. It supports the latest HDMI specs, and has some nice features like Real Cinema (which maintains film’s 24 frames per second when watching a movie with a compatible source), and also the ability to tweak the settings of TruMotion, LG’s image interpolation system.

Interpolation is what ‘smooths out’ video on HDTVs – it actually creates additional frames on the fly to fit between the existing frames of the source, and it’s what can give HD material that documentary/soap opera quality. Sometimes that’s desirable, but other times it just looks bad and cheesy. This TV has Low, High, and User settings for this feature. I was able to tweak the User setting to a good compromise, that smooths out some of the blur and ‘judder’ effect of normal video, but doesn’t make it look artificial. There are lots of other settings to tweak, for audio (downmix preferences, dynamic range, etc.) and everything else. This brings up the user interface. The menu system on the TV is very user friendly, and graphically attractive. The remote control is one of the best I’ve used – it has just enough buttons, while being well-laid out and thin and light, and fits nicely in the hand. The ‘arrow pad’ to move left/right etc. has comfortable buttons and works well (remotes often screw that section up, for some reason, but not this one).

My favorite feature has to be the networking/Internet capability of this TV. When I bought this TV (at a store) it came with a free Wi-Fi USB stick, so it was a good deal, but be aware that on its own the wi-fi stick is an unreasonable -80, and you can’t just use any old USB adapter, it has to be a special LG one – at least it seems to work very well and it’s N or G capable. Or, you can also use the TV’s wired ethernet port – even a 50′ ethernet cable would be cheaper than the wi-fi stick. In either case I think it’s well worth the cost to unlock the TV’s networking capability. Built into the TV are the streaming Netflix interface, VuDu, YouTube access, and more, including Yahoo Widgets – this lets you access your Yahoo account and any associated widgets, like Twitter, weather info, stock feeds, whatever. I only really use Netflix and VuDu in this section, but it allowed me to eliminate my Roku box and remote. When you already have a computer or laptop in the room, the Yahoo Widgets thing seems a little superfluous – this TV is NOT a replacement for a computer with internet by any means, but for some people, being able to quickly check the local weather or movie showings, etc. on the TV could be valuable.

The best part about the networking feature is that it will let you stream media from any computer on the network. You just need to install some included Nero software – which, by the way, is actually small, un-bloated and simple, unlike any other Nero product – and voila, your PC is a media server. You designate a folder (or however many you want) to be your media folder, you put videos, music or photos in it, and you can access them on the TV. It really works well and it’s very easy to do, literally just a few clicks of the remote. I found that even streaming a 1080p mkv file wirelessly from my PC worked fine and looked fantastic. There are a few caveats – for one, it only supports mp3 for music (why not FLAC, or iTunes format?). It supports a lot of video formats (mkv/mp4,avi, divx, and more), but not all of them, and even for supported formats it may be finicky with specific files. Usually, converting the file to another format will solve the issue and make it playable; this is annoying but it’s only happened a few times out of dozens of videos, for me. Occasionally, fast-forwarding or reversing through a video streamed from your PC can be confusing and slow (you backtrack 15 seconds, hit play, and it plays about 2 seconds before where you started). This and the other issue could have everything to do with improper video encoding, and nothing to do with the TV, I don’t know. But given that the TV will automatically update its firmware through the network, one might expect these bugs to be gradually worked out. Hopefully, they will even add support for more file formats with future updates; it’s just a matter of adding more codecs to the firmware, which seems like it should be easy to achieve.

The styling of the TV is subtle and not cheap-looking, unlike some brands (*cough*Vizio*cough*). It’s just a clean piano-black border around the picture, with a tasteful LED ‘bar’ light that stylishly fades from red to blue to indicate power. The stand is easy to assemble (just install some screws) and looks nice while supporting the TV adequately. The screen has a matte surface, so glare, while not totally eliminated, is not an issue. The typical buttons (power, channel, input) are on the right side, out of sight when viewing from the front. This TV has plenty of inputs – 4 HDMI, two component, two old A/V (the red, white and yellow kind), and normal cable input. It also has an optical audio output, which will let you consolidate all sources into one stream. This is great, because I no longer have to switch my AV Receiver between sources – cable, Blu Ray, VHS and Wii all go through the same input on my receiver.

There’s only one feature I really miss – the ability to control my receiver volume from the TV remote. My old tube TV remote could do this, so why not this new juggernaut? Like all flat TVs, the built-in speakers on this one are adequate but not much more. You’ll definitely want a home theater setup, or at least a simple receiver with a pair of speakers, to do the big, beautiful picture justice in the sound department. (BTW, Blu Ray looks stunning on this TV!)

I’m really quite delighted with the LG 42LD550. It’s one of the few major products/appliances I’ve owned that met and exceeded my expectations, and I have to dig pretty deeply to criticize it. Even these criticisms are happily brushed aside, given how much I like everything else. My only regret is not splurging on the 46-inch version. :) You can buy Cheap LG 42LD550 42-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LCD HDTV Online!

Sony KDL46HX800 46 inch Full HD 240Hz LED 3D HDTV Review

Ok, first of i took a risk on buying one because the bundle was so good an offer from Sony. Though like many i bought a sony bravia 40′ 2 years ago, i always wanted to get a big screen to change the 42″ westington house i had from 4 years ago. My finance and i went to sony style store just to check it out and it only took us 5 minutes to decide to get one after watching a few things on the screen in 3D. My finance was complaining about my Gizmo habits so i promised her i’m not buying anything but instead she wanted it more than i did.

Now about the TV..WOW the picture quality will blow your mind. Watching 3D with my Comcast HD Box by turn on 3D was more than i expected. Tried a regular blu-ray with 3D and i was like WOW. Played the free games that came with the purchase on PS3, it takes gaming to another level.
The only little problem i noticed is when you turn on the 3D it takes about 10 seconds for your eyes to get adjusted to the 3D. I heard a lot about getting headaches and feeling of throwing up but nothing of that sort happen to me nor my finance who wears glasses.

I know there is a hugh hole in my pocket now but its worth every line of thread it took out. If you had the money, id recommend you get on, if not then wait for the price to come down and you won’t regret it. You can buy Cheap Sony KDL46HX800 46 inch Full HD 240Hz LED 3D HDTV Online!

Samsung UN55C7000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV (Black) Review

I like the Samsung in general. The sound quality is not great – no room for room-facing speakers. I haven’t used all the features yet (like the 3d), just got it installed – which was not easy. The screen really should NOT be touched. Even your fingertip will leave a mark and the cleaner sold at Frye’s in Auburn, WA was .00. Samsung recommends water only, but I have a friend who damaged a flat screen trying to clean it, so be careful. I can’t get the remote working well, sometimes the TV comes on and not the cable and vice versa. There must be a fix for that, but I don’t know about it yet. We have some tiling in the picture every time we watch. We are shopping for a sound bar. This was our first big purchase through Amazon and the process and service was flawless. I would recommend Amazon to anyone and not just for books. We will be buying a sound bar from Amazon. Love them. You can buy Cheap Samsung UN55C7000 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D LED HDTV (Black) Online!

LG INFINIA 55LE8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz Full LED Slim LCD HDTV Description

  • INFINIA Series
  • Full LED Slim w/ Local Dimming
  • THX Certified Display
  • NetCast Entertainment Access (Wi-Fi Ready)
  • Wireless 1080p Ready

Combining a slim design and thin bezel with enhanced connectivity, the 55-inch LG INFINIA 55LE8500 Full LED Slim LCD HDTV features energy-saving LED backlighting, 1080p Full HD resolution for crystal-clear detail, and TruMotion 240Hz technology for virtually no motion blur. It’s also a great choice for watching sports and movies with fast action thanks to its incredible 1ms (millisecond) response time.

Recognized with a CES 2010 Innovations Award, LG’s Full LED Slim technology elevates picture quality with a slim LED structure that supports detailed local dimming, resulting in an HDTV that provides the deeper black levels and uniform picture quality which typically could not be achieved on an ultra-thin set.

Additionally, this unique technology used in this LG Full LED Slim HDTV helped it achieve picture quality worthy of THX Display Certification–the industry standard for having the correct gamma, luminance, and color temperature. This certification demonstrates that this HDTV can recreate the cinema experience at home, making the picture resemble movie theatre quality. This HDTV also includes a THX Bright Room setting, which optimizes the contrast, gamma and other settings for watching movies in rooms with a lot of ambient light.

With LG’s NetCast, you get access to TV shows, movies and more, streamed directly from the Internet to your television screen. And the LE5400 series also provides compatibility with Wireless 1080p Connectivity (wireless media kit required and sold separately).

Other features include a jaw-dropping 9,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for more stunning colors and deeper blacks, two USB ports for connecting external drives for playing back MP3 audio, JPEG photo and DivX HD video files, stereo speakers with 20 watts of power and Dolby Digital decoding, and four HDMI inputs.

LG INFINIA 55LE8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz Full LED Slim LCD HDTV Review

First, I just received my second set from Amazon today. The first set had an issue on the inside of the GLOSSY glass screen. I couldn’t tell if it was a thread or a small crack in the screen. It obviously wasn’t supposed to be there, and Amazon swapped it out for me. I’m on my first couple hours on the second set, but I haven’t see the same issue with the second set yet. This does support a couple other reviewers suggesting quality control may be an issue with these sets. This contradicts the weight of the TV suggesting it should be very well built.

The TV is stunningly simple to look at. There isn’t a lot of extra bezel or showy manufacturer’s name plates. I love this, as I’m usually driven nuts at having to look at a constant advertisment of a product I’ve already purchased. The “LG” that lights up at the bottom when the TV is turned on, can be set to be off when the set is on. This effectively means in a dark room (as mine is), the ONLY thing you see on this TV is the picture…exactly as it should be. The only exception is a small set of lights along the bottom that are only powered during power on and off to inform the viewer of this.

My general impression on the picture quality is mostly very impressed. I’m not a display expert so I’ll only state what I notice as a slightly more “techy” than average viewer. These sets do seem to have a screen uniformity issue. Large and bright, white or very light colored sections of the screen will show light horizontal bands. These bands are light, but can be distracting depending on the viewer. It seemed to get better with more hours on the first set, but it could have been the firmware issue. Either way, know that if you watch a lot of content containing mostly white screens, you may want to look at another TV. Some people claim to not be able to see this. Others state they see even more of it during panning scenes. Perhaps there is some difference from one panel to the next. Either way, I have seen it on two sets, so anyone looking at purchasing the set should expect it, unless there is an update (software or hardware) to the set at some time.

I looked at a backlit/local dimmed set like this for one big reason though…CONTRAST. Buying this set to watch solid bright screens would seem to be a waste. Where this particular set really shows it stuff is in the black level it can achieve. Movies are beautiful. I thought my old RPTV had a nice picture, but the sharpness and clarity of the 55LE8500 really put my old set to shame. As mentioned above, when you turn off the LG logo, all you see is the picture. Even if there is letterboxing, you will only see the picture. The rest of the screen will be as black as the bezel, and in a dark room, you won’t notice it as letterboxing at all.

Colors are vivid and natural looking. The settings from the factory are pretty decent, but count on using the two extra ISF settings that can be customized to your liking. Having a knowledgable Tech to come over to properly set up the TV would be wise if you can afford it, but it’s not neccesary to achieve a nice picture. There is even a built-in menu system to aid you in doing so.

Summing it up
Pros:
Awesome blacklevel
Sharp picture
Great colors
No flashy labels or lights to be bothersome
Automatic updates if you connect it to the internet
Tons of access to change viewing settings
discrete codes for most anything you might want for a customized remote.

Cons:
screen has uniformity issues
possible quality control issues
maybe a bit too heavy
screen is a bit too glossy
no 3D support

Overall, this is probably the best 2D TV released in 2010. If you can control the lighting in your room, and you don’t watch lots of source material with large patches of very light scenes, this is the TV for you. Amazon is a great source for the set, but know the wireless media kit was offered free with the set last week, and the price has been changing dramatically (down and up and back down again). I gave it 4 stars because it could have been a bit better, and probably should have been. You can buy Cheap LG INFINIA 55LE8500 55-Inch 1080p 240 Hz Full LED Slim LCD HDTV Online!
